Virtual Prelude - 5th grade Only
Dear McCarty Fifth Grade Students & Families,
Music education is a vibrant part of our District 204 curriculum, and although we are currently learning virtually, our students are continuing to flourish in their music classes. Our newest sixth grade band and orchestra students are learning to play in a virtual format and are working on their first performance projects to share with their families. Our older students are also busy performing beautiful music.
Now is the time for our fifth grade students to think about where they may see themselves in the future. There are many musical offerings for sixth grade, and coming up soon, your child will have an opportunity to register for a band, orchestra, or chorus class. We know that helping students select an instrument that has a sound they like makes a huge difference in their at home practice habits, and this is why learning about the available instruments is an important step in our students’ music education.
During November, December and January, fifth graders will experienceVirtual Prelude during their general music class and during Monday mornings.Virtual Prelude is an in-depth study of band and orchestra instruments as well as vocal music. At the end of the unit, students will be given the opportunity to select an appropriate instrument to begin learning in sixth grade as part of the band or orchestra classes and will also learn more about the chorus opportunities. DuringVirtual Prelude, students will be given an introduction to all of the instruments, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. Students will also listen to the sounds of the instruments and have an opportunity to meet with the middle school music teachers during special Zoom sessions.
At the end of thisVirtual Prelude experience, music teachers will help students make their final choice. Students electing band or orchestra as part of their sixth grade exploratory options will begin studying their instrument on the first day of sixth grade in middle school. Students electing to be a part of the chorus classes will also begin on the first day of sixth grade. For students interested in both learning one instrument during school and being in chorus (“combo”), this is also an option.
This is where we need your help! Please help your child get involved with ourVirtual Prelude experience. Our elementary music teachers will be working with your children during their live and independent music class time each week. Classroom teachers will be sharing a Zoom link with your children in Google Classroom so they can meet with our middle school music teachers on Monday mornings. Please look at the schedule below and add these dates and times to your family calendar. We appreciate your help in reminding your child to attend because we know that learning more about all of the instruments is an important part of helping them select an instrument.
