Our Mascot

This is
Midnight, the McCarty School Mascot. Midnight had this picture taken in the fall of 1999,
just before he set off for his latest adventure.
Midnight decided to become a traveler in November, 1994, when
he "galloped the country". In that school year, his travels coincided with
the school's reading program entitled "Read Across America". As Midnight
traveled, students read minutes to match his miles. He visited the alma
maters of McCarty parents from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Iowa,
Kansa, Montana, Nevada, and California. He brought back many mementos of
that journey.
In 1999, Midnight was offered
a trip he just could not refuse. He was to travel on the Space Shuttle Discovery on Space Mission STS-103, which was to repair the Hubble
Space Telescope. After numerous delays, Midnight and the crew he was accompanying finally
lifted off in December, 1999. This journey also coincided with the school reading program,
"Space-Out On Reading." This time the students read 3.29 million minutes
to match Midnight's 3.25 million space miles. During an assembly in the spring the
students viewed a video message from two NASA astronauts who congratulated McCarty
students on reaching their reading goal.
