Specials Curriculum
Fourth Grade
ART
The fourth grade curriculum is very challenging as the
student matures and is capable of handling advanced concepts and tools.
A relief print highlights new media for the year. Projects include
advanced concepts such as profile, silhouette and proportions. This year
also helps the student to develop an understanding of Renaissance art,
and the historical importance of this time period.
MUSIC
Fourth grade students begin the school year by
preparing for their music program which takes place in November.
Students will continue to learn how to read music in the treble clef
through playing the recorder. A strong focus will also be placed on
students learning how to sight-sing short melodies using a movable “do”
system. Students will be taking four District performance assessments
throughout the year. Chorus is offered as an extracurricular activity.
In fourth grade, students continue to work on their music exploration
skills through playing instruments. They also explore harmony in music
through singing rounds and simple descants, and by playing instrumental
accompaniments and ostinati. They will explore different styles of music
as well as music from other cultures; and discover how this can help
them gain a better understanding of different people. Chorus is offered
as an extra-curricular activity. Fourth graders will present a music
program in the fall.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Fourth grade students will work on sport specific
skills and a wide variety of fitness based activities which include
dance, gymnastics, and cooperative games. Specific rules and strategies
of various sports will be introduced and practiced during modified
games. Fourth grade students will continue to have class discussions on
the importance of exercise and proper nutrition. They will learn
advanced muscle groups, the circulatory system and health concepts
through discussions and games during the Heart Adventure unit. Fourth
graders also take the District Physical Fitness Tests in the fall and
spring. Throughout the year, fourth grade students have the chance to
participate in an intramural program before and/or after school.
